Conference excursions
On the last day of the conference, 5th of July, there will be two conference excursions. You can choose between the Zaanse Schans or a boat tour through the canals off Amsterdam.
Zaanse Schans
Date: Friday, 5 July
Time: 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Meeting place: Registration desk
Registration: After July 2 at the registration desk.
The first the excursion is to the Zaanse Schans. After the closing session, a bus departs from VU Amsterdam at 2 pm. It is a 30 minute drive to the Zaanse Schans. You’ll have about 3 hours to walk around and discover what the Zaanse Schans has to offer. The bus will leave at 5:30 pm from Zaanse Schans and bring you back to VU Amsterdam.
The Zaanse Schans is a residential area in which the 18th and 19th centuries are brought to life. You can stroll past the bakery museum and enjoy the smell of fresh cookies, or take a look at the warehouse where clogs are made. You should be sure not to miss the cheese factory, pewter foundry and the various windmills. The Zaanse Schans is a unique part of the Netherlands, full of wooden houses, mills, barns and workshops.
You can download the Zaanse Schans app for walking routes to make sure you don’t miss anything.
Canal Cruise
Date: Friday, 5 July
Time: 2:00 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.
Meeting place: In front main building
Registration: After July 2 at the registration desk.
The second excursion is canal cruise through the canals of Amsterdam. An Amsterdam canal cruise is compulsory for anybody visiting Amsterdam. Amsterdam is laced with 100km of waterways, so there is no better way to experience the essence of the Dutch capital than on an Amsterdam canal cruise. Wind past grand merchant houses, gothic churches, museums, and medieval buildings. We will walk from VU Amsterdam to Zuider Amstelkanaal/Parnassusweg, this is a 20 minute walk. The tour starts there and will also end there, and then we will walk back to VU Amsterdam. You can buy beverages on board and there will be a tour guide.
